Wigan V Penrith

Started by: wigvet (3550)

A great day beckons at a sold out stadium with many folk still clamouring for tickets this week
I think it will a close and open game with, for me, the best rugby player on the planet in Nathan Cleary at the helm making the Panthers slight favorites with the bookies

Come on Wigan!!

RUGBY LEAGUE CORRUPT...
1 Smith should have been banned for Spear Tackle. Last week. I know a R.L official and even he said he should have been banned..
2. How come for a World Cup Final The ref comes from WIGAN?
Can you imagine the furor if a cup final between Man Utd and Liverpool and the Ref came from Liverpool???
3. Forward pass for Wigan's second try. Even Jamie Peacock said it.
4. Try disallowed for Penrtith because of Ref call of TRY Slow motion showed the try scorer was at least 6 " short and the Penrith player had his hand underneath the ball
5. Penrith try disallowed again because of Refs call of NO TRY in last minute He knew that it couldn't be given as a try if there was a bit of uncertainty. 100% FIX
I knew Boxing was a bit dubious. Add Rugby League to the list..

I enjoy watching any game providing its played on a proverbial "LEVEL PLAYING FIELD" Liam Moore the Ref was a DISGRACE Every decision was biased towards Wigan.
Forgot to mention the Ball Steal infringement There was only one Penrith player holding the Wigan player yet the ref penalised him? To add insult to injury, the game was played under international rules when it doesn't matter how many players are in the tackle when you steal the ball..

The ref got the ball steal call wrong…no issues with that, but you obviously don’t know that it DOES matter how many players are in the tackle….surely your rl official friend can put you right with that one !
It would seem your issues are with the ref,and not the Wigan club

Considering Wigan were playing a outstanding Australian team with only fifteen players for part of the game, the result was a great result not only for Wigan but for the rugby league game in our country.

As for the refereeing, it made a nice change for British officials not to lean towards the Australians like some have in the past, but having said that, surely it is time that some officials from France and New Zealand were trained up to the standard of those in our game and the NRL.

Until they are and there are neutral officials, you will always find supporters of football and rugby union making adverse comments like those of admin.

Well done to all concerned at the club!

"I enjoy watching any game providing its played on a proverbial "LEVEL PLAYING FIELD" Liam Moore the Ref was a DISGRACE Every decision was biased towards Wigan"

Owd on a minute, wot about that 'video referee' was he from Wigan, and he made the final decision on just about all of the tries, from multiple camera angles, was that fixed too, along with the cameras, were they manipulating the video, using CGI (computer generated imagery) in real time, that last try nearly killed me at the end when he was trying to work out if the ball had grounded or not, that 's why I was shaking.

I remember watching Wigan playing in the 1960s, Billy Boston Colin Tyrer, Eric Ashton etc

They didn't have video referees in those days, and Billy Boston, Shaun Wane, Denis Betts, Frano Botica, they were all at that match last night, that last night was a bloody good advert for Wigan

What made me smile was the sporting way Penrith accepted the result. After a couple of dubious calls, the way all the players stayed on the pitch and spent time with the fans was fantastic.

Basil correct
Joe Maplin The game was played under International Rules where the number of players in a tackle, when the ball is stolen doesn't matter..
TTS the video ref made his decisions on the Referee's call As he couldn't decide.

The reaction of the Penrith players at the end of the game said it all Any team playing in a World Cup Final and losing would be distraught. They didn't seem bothered

whups.. What are you going on about.?? He was a yard off side when the ball was kicked It was obvious otherwise Moore would have given that too

Watch Basil's video and tell me that it was a try. Read the comments.. It's not just me who can see the game was fixed. Starting with the Smith let off from his Spear Tackle hearing

And for all the people wearing cheery and white glasses I'll ask one question answer YES or NO. Would you be happy if Wigan had been playing St Helens in a Final and the Referee was from St Helens and gave St Helens all those contentious decisions

International rules state for a ball steal to be legal, the other players must drop off the tackle,or roll away ,leaving one on one BEFORE the ball is stolen!
However, this is what happened here, the ref was wrong.

The focus always seem to be on the negative rather than the good things.Any thing to say about the actual game? What about Fields try saving tackles,or Frenchs pass to unlock a very good defence or the super skills of the Penrith half backs ….no thought not.

Btw,I don’t care if the ref comes from mars,as long as he is the best man for the job!
The RFL deem this chap to be the best one around at the moment.
Personally I don’t

Joe. have you watched the video Basil put on? Was Wigan's second try a forward Pass? It was obvious at the time even the commentators said it at half time.

If they had my view from the west stand, they couldn’t possibly say for sure that the pass was forward…that’s why the video ref can’t rule on this…so it’s a try .
I concede that on that angle the ball is short, but there is doubt when watched at full speed.
Would I have awarded it,?no way.
However, here we are again focusing on the negatives of what was a tremendous evenings sport!

When are Wigan going to stop kicking the ball straight into the arms of the opposition Time and time again Smith kicked the ball on the sixth tackle and instead of kicking into space so the opposition had to scramble for the ball he kicked it straight into the arms of the Penrith defence who made a lot of yardage from his kicks

The odds of finding space now is not as easy as it used to be seasons ago as kickers are now put under more pressure in today's faster game and wingers do more in defence helping the full back to deal with a downfield kick.

What Harry Smith is good at is sending deep kicks from his own 20/30 meter area downfield which releive pressure in their own half which then allows the other players to get upfield quicker to play the opposition in their half even if space is not found by the kick.

OC…I actually thought Harry had a very average kicking game…I agree with you on the pressure kickers are under but he’s done much better than that albeit against different opposition
Our defence was superb considering who didn’t play (Thompson and Walters Eseh) and that took the heat off Harry.Other than that OC we are on the same page

After we had scored what turned out to be the winning score, Harry Smith did a lot of deep kicks to take pressure off the team as it was becoming evident with the loss of Leeming and Cooper only coming back after a long injury, the team was beginning to tire as proved by the way Penrith were getting on top in the last ten minutes or so.

One of the best defensive displays, I have seen in the all the years I have supported the club.

p.s. We were also without Havard and N'Samba!

For some reason, Wigan seemed to have a good relationship with Penrith which may have something to do with Bill Ashurst having been regarded by them as one of their best players ever to play for their club.

Every one hoped Wigan would win but in reality Penrith were robbed and were the better team. I watched the match and could not care who won but Wigan had a forward pass and what I saw the try was a double movement and even then he did not get the ball near the line

What they are more annoyed about is British officials not leaning towards them which has been the case on many occasions in the past when Australian teams have come to our country.

Well done, Liam and Chris for not doing likewise!
